How Long Does a Hand-Knitted Sweater Take to Make? (And Why It's Worth the Wait)

A hand-knitted chunky sweater takes roughly 20 to 60 hours of active knitting, which in a made-to-order workshop means one to three weeks from order to dispatch, depending on the design's complexity. Long coats and cable-heavy pieces sit at the top of that range.

What happens after you order

When you order a made-to-order knit from Mumshandmade, the process starts in Thessaloniki, Greece. Your measurements are confirmed, yarn is prepared (we produce our yarns in-house) and one knitter takes your piece from first stitch to final seam. Once finished, it is double checked, packed and shipped by express courier with all duties and taxes already included in your price.

Why hand-knitting takes this long

A chunky sweater contains thousands of stitches, each formed by hand. Cables, hoods, bubbles and colourwork multiply the time.

Made to order means made to measure

The waiting time is not a limitation; it is what makes customisation possible. Because your piece does not exist until you order it, sleeve length, body length and overall fit can be adjusted to your exact measurements. No warehouse inventory also means no overproduction and no unsold stock ending up in landfill. That is the core promise of slow fashion.

Planning around the timeline

Ordering for a specific occasion? Count backwards: knitting time plus a few days of express shipping. For Christmas gifting, mid-November orders are comfortably safe; we publish an annual order-by date each season.

Frequently asked questions

Can the process be rushed? Hand-knitting has a natural minimum speed we won't compromise; that's part of what you're buying. But when a special occasion is near, talk to us: depending on the current workload, your sweater can be knitted through weekends at a special price, so it reaches you sooner without a single shortcut in quality. Priority orders are always discussed personally first. And the moment your piece is ready, it ships express, free, worldwide.

Is a made-to-order knit returnable? Policies differ across makers because each piece is made for one person; check the store's policy before ordering.

Why do handmade knitwear cost more? You are paying for days of a skilled knitter's time plus premium yarn, the same reason bespoke tailoring costs more than fast fashion.
